GARDAÍ HAVE SEIZED cannabis plants worth an estimated quarter of a million euro from a house in Wexford.

The plants were discovered at Ballybeg Great in Screen during a search operation carried out as part of an investigation into the sale of drugs in the area.

A 42-year-old man was arrested in connection with the seizure. He is currently being detained at Enniscorthy Garda Station.

Gardaí said the plants were in various stages of maturity and had an estimated street value of €250,000, subject to analysis.

Investigations are continuing into the sale of drugs in the area.

  • Think of the negatives around cannabis prohibition,I’m my opinion they are all because of its illegality.can we start the discussion yet ,if we are even thinking of entertaining ludicrous ideas like a revision of drink driving limits upward ,then I feel all the people who enjoy cannabis or use it for its medicinal qualities deserve equal time to discuss its legalization.were all adults her.

Execution at dawn. It’s the only way to keep or children safe from this harmless shrubbery.

  • This abomination must be stopped. There’s nothing so revolting as seeing people high on weed: calm, personable, open-minded, non-violent, happy, natural, human, non-competitive, etc. It makes me sick just to think about it. C’mon the guards.

  • The ball is well and truly rolling towards legalisation in many US states. Our government should be trying to get ahead of the curve in Europe and start to seriously discuss alternatives to the current situation. I’d bet that if a referendum was held tomorrow on the legalisation of cannabis it would pass.

  • Not sure how many families have been destroyed by an abusive pothead beating his wife, but, I would bet my bottom dollar that there are 1000’s more families ripped apart by alcoholism than by cannabis consumption!! I honestly can not name one family that has been DIRECTLY broken up by cannabis alone. I’m sure that we can ALL can name one or two abusive and aggressive drunks that have been responsible for espousal/child abuse which has DESTROYED their families!! This usually results in having adverse effects on their children for decades, and in some cases a lifetime after the fact!! I mean can anyone REALLY think of a pothead (who has consumed ONLY cannabis) who goes home after smoking pot and beats their wife and kids?? I think that I can name MANY drunks who drink and go home and abuse their families everyday!! Just saying…..

  • Does anyone have a comprehensive breakdown of how the police come up with “street value” prices? Genuinely asking as for ages – and maybe still – the press offfice was using the “street price” of €10 for an ecstasy pills when the actual street price was half that.

And given the large sums involved, including those resulting from criminalisation, is it not about time we had a sensible conversation about legalising/decriminalizing the plant?

  • Waste of police time and taxpayer’s money. The only reason this is still illegal is that it would put half the vintners out of business.

  • Big deal, just legalise it. Spend my tax money on something more worthy will ‘ya.

One of these days we will let people be responsible for their own bodies

  • Criminals will always exploit ill thought out and logically dubious laws. I think that our descendants will scratch their heads and wonder why we outlawed this particular herbal medicine. The more effective and valuable this natural medicine appears to be, the more the resistance from some quarters seems to increase. Ignorance and a false morality are at the heart of this issue. Money too. To fight a so called war against horticulture, herbs and health, is just ludicrous. Demonising people who use a naturally occurring medicine ,tells a person that they are living in an unnatural and potentially dangerous environment.

  • Yet another waste of the precious Garda resources which could be used detecting harder drugs such as heroin, cocaine ect. Time to legislate and decriminalise.

  • @I Am D Best there is no doubt cannabis can bring about psychosis and paranoia as you say. However shouldn’t we the people be given the right to choose how we treat our bodies? Your main argument here is that it ‘messes people up’, and it has messed up a lot of people up however I believe they have the right to choose to do so, even with all the government warnings people still choose to mess themselves up. I respect your opinion as I believe you are free to express it, what I can’t understand is how you can sit there and tell me not to harm my body, I have every right to choose how to spend my evenings after work aslong as I don’t affect anyone else, I pay tax I don’t steal or hurt anyone else. The same can be said for smokers, they no it can make the impotent cause cancer and numerous other diseases but hey still choose to smoke. People drink alcohol every weekend and cause an untold amount of trouble, they know it can kill you. Both these things are harmful yet they are accepted, what’s the difference with cannabis?

If you advocate that weed should remain illegal then surely you would like to criminalise tobacco, alcohol as well as the likes of Xanax and diazapan, can you imagine the drug squad kicking in the door and arresting people for having a bottle of bud and a fag? People have been smoking for hundreds if not thousands of years, cannabis seeds have been found in shamans groves dated from 2000+ years ago and we made it this far. Do you really think that if marijuana was legalised tomorrow everyone would go out and smoke it, of course not people are rational some like it some don’t, not everyone drinks but some people do and we don’t persecute them for drinking. Look at the Netherlands, beautiful country, and guess what? it’s not falling down, as a social experiment it has proven that a country in the modern era can thrive even when cannabis Is decriminalised.

There’s demand it’s cheap to make and sells for a lot of money, we already produce famous alcohol brands ie Jameson, why not weed? Please try and open your mind and see that these drug busts aren’t going to disappear, people will continue to harvest this plant aslong as there is demand, perhaps it would be better if we didn’t have to go through dealers that could be selling hard drugs but to a local pub/cafe setting. It only seems logical that if these people won’t stop growing this no matter what then why continue to lockup an endless list of people. Why not introduce regulation, at least on a trial basis and start treating it as a medical problem like we do with alcoholics and smokers, instead of being locked up we could provide education and let people chide in relation to how they treat their bodies.

The point of the matter is they are advocating a change to current legislation. If a law is considered pointless then change is required. Laws constantly change with the times and its time this law changed. It would more than likely reduce the crime on the streets practically overnight.
      No big cannabis drug busts.
      No criminals profiting from same.
No gang hits because of “finds”
Less people turning to drink and we all know drink can cause erratic behaviours in people who drink too much, if someone smokes too much they become placid.
It’s one of them drugs that seems like it has the ability to improve nations.

    • both drink and weed have their downsides, its not all for everyone, its not some harmless weed that its lovers try to tell you it is. it has messed up so many people too, it obviously needs to be controlled and correct strains given to correct ailments. the stuff that comes out of these grow houses is weed alright, but all sorts of strain. its a medication, not to be abused but treated with respect. the wrong stuff for the wrong person can induce psychosis – fact.

Of course weed is not for everyone, personal choice is hugely important. If you dont want to try it, then that’s fine.

I’m confident that it’s less harmful than alcohol, one of the most heavily taxed vices in the world. It’s messed up less lives and in a less major way than alcohol has. No one has overdosed and died using weed, but many have died consuming alcohol and many lives have been ruined by alcoholism. Cigarettes are worse then weed also. Weed doesn’t need to be smoked, but an average spliff is less harmful then a 10 pack of cigarettes – fact. Due to the counteracting anti-cancerous chemical THC.

Weed requires less control than alcohol. Alcohol has been consumed by society for centuries regardless of the risks(aggressiveness, brain damage, heart damage, stomach cancer, alcohol poisoning, death)… Why not control weed less than alcohol? Which is less risky? So far unregulated weed has cost less lives then government regulated alcohol. The only lives put in jeopardy are those involved on the black market, which wouldn’t be there if it was legal.

The lack of product control on weed is due to the fact it’s on a black market. Black markets are risky in themselves, there’s no way of being 100% sure the product you got is what you want. It could be laced…

It has leisurely uses, just like alcohol, but unlike alcohol it can be medicinal, curing people instead of making them sick. Certain people get episodes of psychosis due to laced weed and social anxiety disorders. Certain people have tragic nights out/psychosis, when their drink gets laced or when they got a social anxiety disorder and consumed too much alcohol.

Some people drink alcohol day in day out, they’re considered a norm in Ireland. Their lifestyle is theirs to choose. Their having a depressing time (rarely good fun) destroying themselves and the government sit back and take the alcohol tax and let them be. Some people smoke weed every day… and night. Their lifestyle is theirs to choose. Their having a good time, chilling, being lazy. The government cant see tax benefits, so if they find a man like this they charge him a ludicrous fine. Keeping the garda employeed and busy, in war on drugs, using up that tax payer money.

All in all, the case put forth against weed legalization is weak at best.

    • we didn’t ask for a history lesson to proclaim your right to smoke weed, ego? jeez its written all over your long statement. i like how you try to soften it “Certain people get episodes of psychosis due to laced weed and social anxiety disorders” what a load of crap! laced lol, laced? certain people? a lot of people!
laced/spiked anything can happen mate but don’t try to tell me that high doses of THC in weed which is NOT laced weed cannot induce pyschosis. trajic nights out when their drink gets spiked?, yes and again just like weed it doesn’t have to be spiked/laced either for it to be trajic. medicine can make one sick if you take enough of it. it could be laced lol yea and it could also be just good old potently high levels of thc.
