Cost of energy reconnections to be halved
Energy Regulator goes against Bord Gais and ESB resistance against reduction of fee for householders.
THE ENERGY REGULATOR has decided to halve the current reconnection fees for electricity or gas services. Householders who have been cut off due to non-payment of bills will still have to pay to have their electricity or gas reconnected but now the ESB and Bord Gais will have to pay half.
That means that come January, it will cost householders €44 to be reconnected to their ESB electricity supply and €30.87 to be reconnected to Bord Gais energy.
The Irish Times reported a month ago that the Energy Regulator was pushing for the halving of the fees, but was opposed by the energy companies. There will now also be a code of practice put in place making it more difficult for householders to be disconnected from their utilities in the first place. They will be contacted four times, twice of which will be in writing, and with 10 days’ notice before disconnection.
