A 29-YEAR-old man has pleaded not guilty to murdering a woman at a Kilkenny shopping centre by reason of insanity.

Shane Smyth (29) with an address at McGuinness House, Evans Lane, Kilkenny is charged with murdering Mairéad Moran (26) on 8 May 2014 at the Market Cross Shopping Centre in Kilkenny City.

At the Central Criminal Court today Mr Smyth pleaded not guilty to murdering Ms Moran by reason of insanity.

This morning Ms Justice Margaret Heneghan told the jury of nine women and three men that this trial is likely to conclude within the week, but “for practical reasons” the trial would not be starting today.

“You won’t be hearing evidence until tomorrow when we will be in a position to start the trial at 11am,” she said.
