This year's "waterproof" Daffodil Day won't be affected by bad weather

Organisers say they have reassessed how they fundraise after torrential weather on the day caused donations to drop by 50 per cent last year.

AFTER WIND, RAIN, and even snow hampered last year’s Daffodil Day, the Irish Cancer Society has reassessed its campaign to ensure its efforts won’t be dampened again.

Donations were down 50 per cent last year after torrential rain meant less people were out on the street and available to donate to volunteers, but organisers expect a good turnout today.

A spokesperson said that the Society has taken steps to “waterproof” this year’s Daffodil Day, as 2013 made them rethink how they conducted the day.

“On the street”

“We were totally reliant on people being out on the street,” they added.

“We hope for sunny skies and we have done our best to waterproof our plans,” Mark Mellett, Head of Fundraising, said, ”with new indoor collection locations, our Daffodil Day app offering many ways to donate and support without leaving the house”.

“I want to thank our volunteers, who worked so tirelessly last year, and helped us raise the much needed donations to fund our free nationwide cancer services and cancer research.”

Some ways people can support Daffodil Day include:

  • Buying a daffodil or Daffodil Day merchandise from a street seller
  • Making a donation by phone, CallSave 1850 60 60 60
  • Making a secure donation online, go to www.cancer.ie
  • Texting Daff to 50300 to donate €4
  • Downloading the newly designed Daffodil Day app
  • Take a #daffie: a picture of you with your daffodil, and post it online texting Daff to 50300 to donate €4

Events taking place today include Cork volunteer Nora Casey hosting a mammoth 11 hour coffee morning from 9am in Tigh Ui Laoighres Bar, Bealnamorrive, Co. Cork.

“Storm Troopers from the 501st Legion will be leaving the dark side behind,” a spokersperson said, and selling Daffodils on Grafton Street for Daffodil Day. That’s from 11am.

400 Pupils of St Finian’s National School, Newcastle, Co. Dublin will create a Giant Human Daffodil at 1pm.

Following a balloon release, some water will deliberately be brought into proceedings at Dell Campus in Limerick between 12 and 2pm, where a water the daffodils event will take place, involving staff getting to throw water at management.
