  • I was merging with the traffic from the blanch exit at about 7:40 & an articulated lorry let me no bother. Some other idiot behind me decided he wanted a piece of it only he was in the lorry’s blind spot. Both kept driving & as the car tried to merge all I could hear was a big crunch. The lorry mashed the front of the car. At this point only the middle lane of the M50 was open because of that. The traffic was only crawling at about 5mph. What your man in the car was at ill never know. Not as if he couldn’t see the huge lorry beside him.

  • I know I will get giving out to for this but seriously why cant we introduce driving lessons to deal specifically with motorway driving.
As it currently stands driving lessons really only cover town and country driving where it’s generally single lane traffic and learning about motorway driving from a book/cd. There is no practical on how to join or exit a motorway in a safe a manner, the use of lanes.
Yes I am aware it is illegal to have a learner driver on a motorway but without practical learning on motorway use accompanied by a qualified driving instructor more accidents will happen.

    • agreed, there is something drastically wrong with our approach to motorway driving, when i always find that traffic nearly always moves faster on the left lane when its busy, people driving constantly in the middle lane block the whole place up.

  • Any updates on the accident? seems everyone has decided to talk about “driving tests”!

  • an accident close to the blanchardstown junction? surely not…almost every day there’s accidents here, there are drivers out there that just can’t handle more than 2 laned roads and become a danger to those that can when they drive the m50

  • At least half of the driving test should now be done on motorways considering the excellent motorway structure we have, parallel parking, reversing around corners etc all done in an estate but there should at least be a trip on the M50/ N4/ N3 etc as part of the test as motorways are used on most people’s commute these days and some of the driving you see daily on motorways and the lack of driver confidence is what is causing these accidents… That and fools speeding down the fast lane and shooting across three lanes of traffic to get to the turn off at the last minute, they do my head in!!!!

  • As above you can’t drive on the motorway as a learner but the day you get the pink license your all set to go flying onto the M50 despite the fact that merging on a motorway is one of the hardest things you do as a driver and is particularly dangerous without experience.

You can fail your test for so many small infractions but don’t get taught how to drive on a motorway safely, it’s something that needs to be addressed ASAP.

    • Traffic on the motorway has to allow you to merge.

    • No! Traffic already on the motorway has the right of way. Having said that, it is not only polite and considerate to allow merging traffic to merge (in turn if necessary), it also makes the road safer for everyone.

From the “Rules of the Road”:
“When entering the motorway, exercise care and attention, and yield to traffic on the motorway. You must follow the steps below when joining a motorway.

Use the acceleration lane to build up your speed before merging into traffic on the motorway.
Signal early to other motorists that you intend to merge.
As you approach on the slip road, check in your mirrors and your blind spot for a safe gap in traffic in the left-hand lane of the motorway.
Obey road signs and road markings.
Do not drive on hatch markings before merging into traffic on the motorway.
Give way to traffic already on the motorway.
Adjust your speed as you join the motorway so you match, as near as possible, the general speed of traffic in that lane.
Treat each lane change as a seperate manoeuvre. Stay in the left-hand lane long enough to adjust to the speed of traffic before attempting to overtake.”

“You must progress at a speed and in a way that avoids interference with other motorway traffic.”

So if someone is attempting to merge you should allow them to.

    • Damocles. Totally agree. There should be a sign 300m 200m and 100mtrs on motorway before sliproad entering saying “Must Merge in Turn” and should be an offence to excellerate to not allow a motorist enter.

They could clear the debt in a few months if people were actually fined for driving offences.

    • Exactly m50 driving should be part of the lessons and test. I learned to drive took lessons and passed my test without every driving on the m50 .. Ur not allowed for a start without full license .. I went on the m50 a few times very late at nite untill I felt confident enough to drive it in the day ..

  • We need greater use of the many cameras on the M50, by the Authorities, to track down and prosecute the Road hogs and demon drivers that are faced daily.

  • When a newly qualified driver passes their test they should have to prove that they have taken 5 lessons on motorway driving before they receive their licence. Also adverts instructing existing drivers how to merge would be enormously cost effective.

  • Considering learner drivers aren’t allowed drive on the motorways. Should it not be brought in that they recieve specific driving lessons on motorways instead of driving on national roads before they pass they’re test and then they’re free to go on the motorway without training???

  • The same people who elbow their way in front of you in a bar or a chipper queue are the same people who deliberately force their way into “your space” on the roads, are the same people who overtake on the inside, are the same people who drive 6 feet behind you at 75 mph, are the same people who wont let you out for no good reason, are the people who cause crashes. Correct use of the road network is simple – Care, caution, courtesy. Everybody gets where they are going.

  • Driving test is too easy, should be different sections, city driving during rush hour, night driving and R and L road driving. Once passed and you have your full licence then you have to complete a motorway test before you can drive on one, have a different L plate for the different levels of drivers, and do a few hours with a skid car and an advanced driving lesson.

  • Typical Irish, you fail your driving test and your allowed to drive home… How is that right???

Thats because your driving test in no way reflects your driving skill. Just like most test & exams in any sector do not give you the skills you need for that particular job. Understand that experience is key to driving just like any other job. Most car drivers are novices. How many people comment here about taxi drivers truck drivers or bus drivers. These are the people with the most road craft & thats down to more training yes but above all more experience. My advice to people complaining about other drivers is,have you questioned your own driving & remember you must account for other less advanced drivers. Its the law & professional drivers like myself have to do it everyday. I would say that some of the keyboard warriors on here are the ones that raise a few eyebrows on the road everyday. If you look at the UK driving standards which are some of the best in the world, tolerance on the road is the greatest skill they have. If you want to improve road safety in Ireland its the thinking & tolerance that has to change.

    • mjhint entirely agree. have my test 20 yrs now from the north and UK driving standards are so much better. I despair every time I get into my car looking for the next idiot. indicators are optional and roundabouts are exotic creatures that seemingly very few know how to negotiate

Is there a hotline to use to report bad motorists?

    Reply
  • whilst it is technically a motorway there is a posted speed limit of 100 kph so the outside lane is only for overtaking. yet morons continually speed up that lane well in excess of this limit and it’s also a limit speed not a target speed. those that hog the central lane also need their dumbass wings clipped too. not enough enforcement so people get to drive any bloody way they like causing accidents leading to injuries fatalities and higher insurance costs

  • I think once you go for advanced driving test you have to do motorways .But I agree it should now be in the first test .
But it is not just young drivers its everyone rushing about and people who have passed their test a year or more and think they are immortal are more dangerous. I think once you pass your test there should be a cap on engine size for a couple of years . The more powerful the car and size another test to see if you are capable of handling it . But we are always going to have accidents but anything to cut it down and save lives and injures would be good .
