Explosion reported in Lurgan, county Armagh

PSNI said officers were in the area at the time because of an unnotified parade.

PSNI OFFICERS ARE investigating reports of an explosion in Lurgan this afternoon.

The incident took place at the junction of the North Circular Road and Levin Road shortly after 3pm.

Police were already in the area following information that an unnotified parade was to take place.

No injuries were reported.

It is understood the device was planted in a bin on the perimeter of a residential area.

Sinn Féin assembly member John O’Dowd called the attack both “callous and stupid”.

“We are thankful that this bomb did not injure anyone but it could easily have been a different story. The location of the device in a rubbish bin has striking similarities to a previous incident in the area when an explosion in a waste bin in the Freecrow area narrowly missed killing or seriously maiming three children.”

He said the bomb was planted by people who oppose to the peace process and show “complete disregard for the public”.
