THE GALWAY HOOKER monument in Eyre Square, Galway has undergone an extreme makeover from a group of primary school children.
A total of 134 children, ranging in age from eight to 13 years of age, and their families from Tirellan National School covered the iconic monument in 2,086 patches, using 300 balls of wool and 3,796,520 individual stitches.
According to a report in the Galway Independent, teacher Karla Bödeker came up with the idea after coming across the book ‘Urban Knits’ at Christmas and was inspried to do something for the local community.
“Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends were great at helping out, showing the children how to knit,” she said, adding that local menswear shop Anthony Ryan’s donated a voucher to cover the costs of some of the wool.
The Galway hooker monument was erected in 1984 and is a representation of the traditional Galway fishing boat called a Galway Hooker.
