High winds and plenty of rain to hit Ireland again today

Met Éireann has issued another weather warning for today with rain and high winds expected to hit parts of the country today.

MET ÉIREANN HAS issued another weather warning for today with strong winds expected to hit coastal counties in Connacht and Munster throughout the day with parts of Ulster also affected.

It will be wet and windy today, the meteorological service says, with rain spreading to all areas in the morning and clearing eastwards in the afternoon and early evening. Rain showers will follow.

It will be very windy tonight with scattered showers across the country. Temperatures – which will reach highs of 13 degrees Celsius today – are expected to drop as low as 3 degrees overnight.

Weather warnings are in place until 3pm this afternoon in the coastal counties of Connacht and Munster with south to southwest winds expected to reach mean speeds of between 45 and 60 kilometres per hour.

Gusts of between 60 and 90 kilometres per hour are also expected.

In Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal southwest to west winds will reach mean speeds of 60 to 75 kilometres per hour with gusts of 90 to 120 kilometres per hour which will be strong in coastal areas.

A gale warning has also been issued for Irish coastal waters and on the Irish sea with southerly gales or strong gales becoming southwesterly and reaching storm force at times this evening and early tonight between Erris Head and Fair Head.

Parts of Galway were hit by flash flooding yesterday after stormy winds and rain hit the west coast.
