Niamh, Hitler did not rise to power promising mass murder. He rose to power promising depression era Germans that the state would solve their problems and deliver a classless society. In the context, of our current crisis we should remember this.

Apologies sean, I misread your comment. I agree that the promises and circumstances that hitler made to get himself into power should never be forgotten which is why Merkel is fighting so hard for austerity and fiscal conservatism but in doing so she is only taking into account the effect this is having on the germans and failing to take into account that the penury in other countries is encouraging far right extremism. So although you are right, we should never forget, it is precisely this thinking within the german government that is encourage far right sentiment in europe.
