AN IRISHMAN has died following his collapse at a hotel in Caracas, Venezuela after a suspected attempt to smuggle drugs resulted in cocaine-filled condoms bursting in his body.

The Department of Foreign affairs has confirmed that the man is originally from the Athlone area and is aged in his 30s.

The department is providing consular assistance to his family following the death.

It is understood that two other Irishmen who were travelling with him are being held on drugs charges in Caracas, RTÉ reports.

I’m sorry for his family who no doubt are suffering at this time. I’m also sorry for all those who suffered and are suffering as a result of the drugs he helped supply & distribute.

  • I’ve noticed quite a few reader’s comments being deleted by The Journal over the last couple of weeks. It is obvious that some have been removed here too. Why? Aren’t we entitled to give an opinion. Saving bad language and downright slander, surely all comments should be left alone for all to see. Bad stuff by The Journal….

    • People post alot of nonsense here that goes far beyond an opinion. When people speak here they say stuff that they would never say publicly to a crowd, they talk as if they are talking to a bunch of mates in private. Alot of the stuff said in alot of comments, people wouldnt dare ring up a radio show and say the same thing. For 2 reasons, 1. they probably don’t even mean it half the time, and 2: anonymity…..Keyboard Warriors

They dont realize that what they say is being published just like a newspaper, or is being broadcast in an equivalent way as it would be on the radio or TV. 1000s of people read the articles, including family of people in said articles, and there’s nothing more annoying than sifting through trolls and people that dont really care what they are saying.

Basically , when you post something, you’re not talking to your mates, you are publishing it to the public.

  • I don’t know the circumstances, so commenting will always turn out from my own biased opinion.
    I am very against drugs – 100%.
They are an abominable scourge on any society that they touch.

Any person who has helped in it’s creation, transport or sale are not good people in my books.

However, as a few other people have noted here – we do not know what he and his friends were under. Maybe they just wanted to get some money to go back home?

Or.. maybe they just wanted money to stay there for another 2 months and party.

Both scenarios happen way too often.

  • Look we all make mistakes some of us make big ones , some of us make small ones. We all learn from them and most try better themselves and some don’t . Also greed is a powerful pull and some get drawn into that even good living people . We don’t know why this happened and don’t know why he was in this situation . So wish people would not judge I agree with both sides , ect if you play with fire thats the chance you take but also agree with other sude we don’t know if was desperate ect or maybe forced. We all seen show banged up abroad. Look comment all you like but be non bias and open to what might of been real reason..

  • I agree with you that it was a foolish act and his own fault but this rhetoric of drug takers being ‘victims’ is crap. You live and die by your own choices. V sad for families who lose druggie relations but let’s not rewrite history. They chose to take drugs, they lost, their fault… We need to be tougher on drugs (but legalise cannabis, which is far less harmful than alcohol)

  • My comment is gone why? As one drug mules death saves hundreds from misery a fair deal in my book.

  • This person had lost his life and this is the support he gets from his fellow countrymen. You don’t know the circumstances involved so don’t be so quick to judge. The Irish of today are a fickle bunch. There was a time when we stuck together.
