JUNIOR MINISTER ANN Phelan was the only TD in the Dáil as legislation to close St Patrick’s Institution was passed yesterday.

Once Phelan, the junior minister for rural affairs, had given her speech on the bill, she was left as the only TD in the chamber

Leas-Ceann Comhairle Michael Kitt and Phelan then proceeded to agree a number of amendments to the Prisons Bill 2015.

Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams admitted today that his party should have been there, but laid the blame with the government.

He told reporters: “The responsibility rests with the government for not tabling and scheduling legislation it wants to bring forward.”

The bill had received submissions from a number of TDs in its second stage. After the amendments were agreed, the Dáil adjourned until this morning.
