KAREN BUCKLEY’S KILLER Alexander Pacteau will have satellite TV and a playstation when he is moved to a newly refurbished prison following threats from other inmates.
The 21-year-old will be held at a special unit for prisoners serving life at Shotts jail, instead of the notorious Her Majesty’s Barlinnie Prison, where he has been held until now.
Barlinnie ranks as one of the toughest jails in Europe, while Shotts has a high-tech gym and offers courses in creative writing, drama and craft work. It also provides a ‘supportive regime’ for inmates facing life in prison.
According to a dedicated UK newspaper for prisoners, Inside Time, the Kerr House facility within Shotts Prison “offers low supervision prisoners an opportunity of participating in a less structured and regimented regime earlier than under the current arrangements”.
Scottish Conservatives’ chief whip John Lamont expressed concern at the move, saying:
“The impression this creates is that life in jail won’t be all that bad.
That’s hurtful to the victims and their families, and gives our justice system a bad name.
Pacteau was sentenced to 23 years for the murder of Irish nurse Karen Buckley. He attempted to strangle Karen before hitting her repeatedly with a heavy spanner and then hiding her body on a farm.
Karen Buckley had moved from Cork to Glasgow at the start of this year, to take up a course at Glasgow Caledonian University.
