GARDAÍ IN BALLYBAY are appealing for witnesses following a fatal traffic collision in Co Monaghan yesterday.
The accident occurred at roughly 5.30pm when two cars collided on the R188, Monaghan to Cootehill road, at Stranooden.
A woman in her 80s, a passenger in one of the cars, was taken by ambulance to Cavan General Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
She had been part of a group of five travelling in the car at the time of the collision.
The female driver of the car, a woman in her 40s and a second passenger, a man in his 90s, were also taken to Cavan General Hospital with minor injuries.
Two further passengers did not require hospital treatment.
The driver of the second car, a woman in her 70s, was also taken to Cavan General Hospital, although her injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
She was the sole occupant of her car.
The road is closed with diversions in place and Garda Forensic Collision investigators are expected to examine the scene later this morning.
The Coroner has been notified of the incident.
