Japan’s north west rocked by magnitude 6.6 earthquake

A POWERFUL earthquake has rocked the Nagano prefecture in Japan, according to the Kyodo news agency.

The NHK broadcaster says that it struck Japan’s mountainous Niigata prefecture in the west of the main Honshu island at about 4am local time (7pm Irish Time).

Kyodo also reports that there is no new tsunami alert after this latest quake and there are currently no reports of any damage.

The shock measured 6.6 on the Richter scale.
