Open thread: Have any pubs near you closed down?

The recession has hit pubs hard with almost 1,000 of them closing in the past five years. Have any in your area closed down? And are they missed?

IRISH PUBS HAVE always played a central part in Irish society – but the recession has hit them hard.

Almost 1,000 pubs have closed in the past five years as people opt for cheaper alcohol ahead of going out. Earlier this month the Financial Times estimated that there now just (!) 7,509 licensed pubs in the country.

As a parliamentary committee continues to hold discussions on how alcohol is being misused in Irish society, we got to thinking about the role alcohol plays in Irish society.

So we want to know: Have any pubs near you closed down? And are they missed? Were they a key part of the community or just another place where people go to get hammered?

Over to you…

PS: Got your phone or your camera near you? If you have any photos of Irish pubs which have closed, send them our way and we’ll use them in a slideshow. Mail tips@thejournal.ie.

  • There are 3 pubs in my town which close & reopen on fairly regular basis these days. The pubs that are continuing to do well are the ones with good smoking areas – whatever your opinion on the ban, that’s the truth!!

  • neither Conways or Parnell Mooney closed because of the recession!

  • There are a couple of pubs around, but they are so quiet during the week, with hardly anyone, and sometimes nobody, in them during the weekdays. The weekends are as dismal. It’s a real pity because they are really quite nice. It’d be a shame to lose them. Hopefully they hang on in there.

  • Kilmore quay lost both it’s pubs in the last 5 years ‘The Wooden House’ (one of the oldest in Ireland) and ‘Kehoes’ (a pub and museum to all things Maritime) mostly due to the fact that the place thrives on the fishing trade, but most fishermen down there have now had to resort to selling their boats and leaving the village to find work elsewhere. One of the last thatched villages in Ireland it’s sad to see it so quiet but the community always keeps strong and positive!

  • I hope more shut, they are a complete rip off, they operate as a legal cartel controlled by the VFI, 5 euro a pint, should be half that..

    • I agree about the cost its outrageous and the selection of drinks is shit. Almost every pub in Ireland has the same taps. The odd pub with over priced Erdinger on draught is not enough.

  • Unbelievably there are 16 pubs and 8 betting offices in my town and in the last 5 years only one pub has closed and Celtic bookmakers was the only bookies to close!!

  • The Cock Tavern in Gormanston seems to have closed. Went there the odd time for food during the day.. Don’t know what sort of crowd it pulled at night. Obviously not a huge one of late. Feeling pinch I’d say since M1 motorway opened. It’s positioned on the old n1. Claimed to be “Ireland’s Oldest Pub”.. But I think every county in Ireland has one of those..

  • the simple truth is pubs can’t compete with the cheap drink that you can get in supermarkets. My family own and run a bar & restaurant, by no means are our prices extortionate… €3.70 for pint of Guinness, but why pay that when you can get 4 cans for €5 in any off license. Most pubs now are struggling to make ends meet. I don’t believe the smoking ban had any affect on people not drinking in pubs.. I certainly don’t know anyone who’s stopped going to the pub over it anyway. In my opinion, it’s simply a matter of cost… what’s cheaper. It’s sad I really hope the pub culture in Ireland doesn’t die out, I also think that selling alcohol so cheap is dangerous, at least in a pub the measures are regulated… but anyway just my opinion.

  • 5 advertised for sale in Roscommon last week. No wonder the licenced trade is lobbying for shops to stop selling booze! Better buy in shops and take it home rather than drink and drive. The last little enjoyments are being removed by this shower of puritans in FG and Labour. What about the Councillor idiot in Clare who wants to cut prescription Viagra for those with erectile dysfunction. Doesn’t he know you get only 4 tablets per month on the HSE medical cards etc!! Thats 4 nights a month on Viagra, or 4 weekends on Cialis – longer lasting. Stop us drinking, now stop us bonking!! What the hell next??? I’m looking for odds on Labour having less than 5 seats in the next elections!!

  • Who cares , overpriced drink , poor service, filthy toilets, bouncers, crap food, I am glad greedy publicans get what they deserve for years they held people to ransom by dictating prices , barring people, and having a take it or leave it approach,I hope more close and that those who remain open get their act together and start to respect the punters that put the money in their tills, most now dont even employ full time barmen and use cheap non experienced student labour, they are getting what they deserve, publicans, politicians, bankers and, builders/ developers these are the scum who robbed the people of this great little nation of ours

One of my locals , The Kestrel house closed down for a year and only reopened last month because they were caught operating without a licence for two years. apparently bailiffs came in , told everyone to get out and replaced the locks on the doors there and then. It was sold for €2m, down from 7.4m in 2004.

Up the road , The Submarine was revamped from a busy one story pub to a three story monstrosity with 3 bars , 3 floors and a stage. it now lies empty during the week bringing in maybe a couple of dozen at weekends for matches but otherwise i don’t know how they’re not losing money simply being open, heated and lit.

The point of both stories is that eventually the recession ends and proprietor greed and hubris begin.
drinking habits are changing and its time we disentangled our culture from the obsession with alcohol.

  • In fairness those pubs in the slideshow don’t strike me as the kind of places that would attract entice you in with a welcoming atmosphere

  • Publicans cashed in on the boom of off licences, sold the licences to big supermarket chains, that’s the reason pubs are closing.

  • Nearly one year ago we published an article about pubs closing down in Dublin city centre and 3 out of 6 are now open or being refurbished. Those 3 are Parnell Mooney, Cassidy’s and Europa Bar.
The most amazing thing is the renaissance of the East side of Westmoreland Street where nearly all the premises are back on business.

Bourbon St on MacCurtain St also closed down recently. Pubs and night clubs have opened and closed and changed hands at an alarming rate in Cork for the last 10 years though. And probably longer, if you ask around
