Michaella McCollum has been freed from prison in Peru

The Tyrone native has been jailed there since 2013.

CONVICTED DRUG SMUGGLER Michaella McCollum has been freed from prison in Peru.

McCollum was jailed along with Scottish woman Melissa Reid after being arrested at Lima Airport in August 2013.

The pair were found with a large quantity of cocaine in food packets inside their luggage.

Both received sentences of six and a half years.

This afternoon her solicitor Kevin Winters confirmed that she was released at 5pm yesterday following a successful application for parole.

In a statement, Winters has clarified that she was not released under any repatriation scheme between Peru and the United Kingdom.

A pending judicial hearing is set to determine the conditions of her parole.

“At this stage it remains unclear when Michaella may be eligible to return home,” Winters said.
