In pics: March on the Dáil for disability access

Thousands took to the streets in Dublin to demand equal rights – and no cuts in resources – for those with disabilities.

THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE with disabilities, their relatives and supporters marched to Leinster House from Dame Street this afternoon to demand equal rights and greater resources in the upcoming Budget.

Read Amy Croffey’s report on the march here. This was the scene as the Disability Rights Coalition-organised march got their message across:

  • @ Garry. Firstly I’m not entirely sure what your sentiment ‘in looking for what they describe as “equality”‘ means other than being quite derogatory in nature. Perhaps you think they should just settle? Would you react the same way if it were able bodied people protesting about unemployment?
The thing is Garry, guess what- a person with a disability has the same rights as everyone else. Yes by law the exact same rights and their rights are not being met. This march was not just about money, it was about the fact that government have continuously ignored this fact.
The cuts to disability have disproportionately effected people with disabilitiesn( more so than the general population) because of their situation.
So No Garry. They should not just settle. More so, what a disabled person calls ‘equality’ is exactly the same as what you would call ‘equality’ or anyone else for that matter.

  • gary, accept what? the cuts? do you also accept a meeting with your gp as i did last night bucketing in tears on how i felt about my future and how i felt i couldnt go on like this? to be offered anti-depressants because no one else will offer help when i need it? Look to the woman in mitts holding the scissors. the one smilin’ for joy with this sort of ‘acceptance’ c’mon this was the person at the gp surgery last night AFTER i had been in A’E with a broken hand and told i could not n take the pain killers offered due to flipping crohns disease and with a damaged achilles thanks for being too long in dodgey shoes and now on a morphine patch! yeh accept my a…the dodgies cos the hse had stopped funding the shoes!

  • gary i cannot understand your comments the disabled protesting today have taken the same cuts as you and i in every budget what they are objecting to is the extra cuts ontop of these that are happening every single day not once a year. this is unfair and has been happening over the last 3 years they have taken these cuts quietly but when they are told that their services are being cut and they have to sit at home respite is being cut if this was primary or secondary schools their would be a national outcry yes we want equality and to live in a fair and just country

  • Gary get a fing grip €25 a week waves for some people reduced to zero. We have spongers who never worked a day in their life free loading and getting everything handed to them. These people continually punching above their weight and teaching everyone else a thing or two and then we have narrow minder shitebags like u, uuuuuugh!

  • Scuzzer Willie o’Dea got a right roasting at it. He looked as if he wanted the world to swallow him up, quiet a feat for one of the most arrogant and disdainful men that you could ever meet.

  • In looking for what they describe as “Equality” I suppose it’s somewhat disingenuous to suggest they should accept the reductions in monies available to Government in these difficult times, like everyone else.

    • Garry, seriously…. ” reductions in monies available to Government”
not one of the Government ministers or Enda himself have taken a pay cut since taking office.
They make a big deal that they took their current jobs on reduced wages vs their predecessors, but those reduced wages were still a massive wage increase on their prior salaries as TDs and also a top up on their existing pensions that many are already receiving etc.

please use a little fact to back up your point, and think about the comments you are making.
