GERMANY’S INTERIOR MINISTER has controversially suggested that EU member states should “create” conditions to encourage Greece to leave the eurozone – marking the first time that a cabinet minister has openly questioned whether the struggling country should remain in the bloc.
Speaking to news magazine Der Spielgel, Hans-Peter Friedrich said: “I’m not talking about kicking out Greece, but to create incentives for an exit that it can’t refuse.”
His comments come one week after Greek ministers passed austerity measures demanded by the EU and other creditors in exchange for €130 billion in new bailout loans – a move that caused clashes between protesters and police on the streets of Athens.
Other German ministers – including the Economics Minister Philipp Roesler – have also called for Greece to leave the currency bloc, however both the Chancellor Angela Merkel and Finance Ministergi have pledged their support for the country.
What do you think – should Greece be encouraged to leave the eurozone?
