My sincere sympathies to the family, friends and colleagues of this garda. I hope they catch the bast**ds.

This is haunting me tonight. We may bitch and moan about the gardaí, we may complain about speeding tickets and the attitude we might get from some of them when-so-ever we may have to deal with them. Bit then something like this happens…. and you realise what they have to do on a daily basis, but also what they are prepared to do for us. I have heard truly terrifying stories about what various gardaí have had to face in our name. Tonight an entire family is facing something truly awful. To them i wish to pay my respects, and to the whole force i want to express my thanks. To this Garda in particular i want to express my admiration and respect. He has made the ultimate sacrifice to our country on our behalf. RIP.

Maybe now Alan Shatter might realise that the Gardai need proper funding & support, €20m here is certainly more needed than €20m on the national gallery or senators.

Less than 24 hours ago I was reading vitriolic comments aimed at front line workers here on the journal.ie. Every Garda who reports for duty is risking their lives. Every fire-fighter risks their lives day in day out. Every paramedic witnesses horrific scenes on a daily basis. Every nurse in A&E must steel themselves against the potential injuries they have to deal with on a daily basis…

Nobody becomes a Garda or a nurse or a paramedic or a firefighter to make money.

A garda died protecting the community. Our community.
A family is devastated. The nation should take stock and reflect on our priorities…

My Mam volunteers to work in my local credit union each Friday evening. This is horrible to read… and to imagine that resources for our protectors are to be slashed is incredibly scary.

I hate to see tragedies such as this used as political footballs but it isn’t easy to ignore that side of things.

I feel so much anger at the moment but I must park it, right know we must acknowledge a hero has died. Died trying to keep this country safe for the rest of us. May God keep all of our guardians safe. Not that I am religious but who else would I ask.

Shocking news RIP. isn’t it well over due that our countries Guards were armed.

The sentence for capital crimes is 40 years….that is a death sentence in its self.
