RTÉ’S STEVE CARSON is to leave the state broadcaster for a role as head of BBC’s Northern Ireland productions, it was announced today

Carson, who is currently RTɔs Chief Editorial Advisor and Director of Factual Group, will be responsible for growing the contribution from Northern Ireland to network channels as well as delivering programmes to local audiences, BBC said today.

He had only been appointed to his current role this year, but worked as Director of Programmes for a number of years taking on temporary responsibility for RTÉ’s current affairs department.

Commenting today, Carson said he was “looking forward to working with all the production teams to help make ambitious programmes that will appeal to local and network audiences”. However he said he was going to miss working alongside the teams in RTÉ.

RTÉ Managing Director Glen Killane said Carson has made a “huge and valued contribution” to RTÉ television over the last four years and wished him well in his new role.

Steve Carson is also vice-president of the European Broadcasting Union’s television Committee and a board member of the Celtic Medica Festical. He is married to RTÉ broadcaster Miriam O’Callaghan.
