GOOD MORNING

The 9 at 9 Nine things you should know this morning…

EVERY MORNING, TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you should know with your morning coffee…

1. #STABBING: Gardaí are appealing for witnesses after a man was fatally stabbed in Togher, Co Cork, last night. The man died at Cork University Hospital after suffering stab wounds and head injuries, according to the Irish Examiner.

2. #CORK: A postmortem examination is to be carried out on the body of a man who died at a house party in Cork on Christmas Day. The man was one of two people who died at the house. Gardaí believe that the men, both in their 30s, died of drug overdoses, RTÉ reports. However, the results of toxicology tests are expected to take a number of weeks.

3. #ROAD DEATHS: Gardaí are investigating two separate road traffic incidents which resulted in the deaths of two pedestrians. One man was killed on the N4 in Co Westmeath in the early hours of this morning, while a man aged in his 60s died after being struck in Dooradoyle in Limerick city yesterday evening.

4. #RESCUE: Two women aged in their early twenties were rescued from the River Liffey in Dublin in the early hours of this morning, RTÉ reports. After being pulled out of the water shortly after 3am, the two were brought to hospital where they are said to be in a stable condition.

5. #BRITAIN: David Cameron has said he hopes to see an Irish President officially visit Britain during his time as Prime Minister. In an interview with RTÉ for the documentary The Queen’s Speech, to be aired tonight, Cameron said that the historic visit by Queen Elizabeth to Ireland earlier this year was  ”game changer” in Anglo-Irish relations.

6. #SYRIA: Arab League monitors have arrived in Syria to observe the situation in the country. Bashar Assad’s regime has only intensified its crackdown on dissent in the week since agreeing to the Arab plan to stop the bloodshed; an estimated 5,000 people have been killed in anti-government protests so far, according to rights groups.

7. #LONDON: Eleven people have been arrested over the fatal stabbing of a teenager on London’s Oxford Street on St Stephen’s Day. A second man was stabbed in the thigh near the same spot about five hours later, but police say it is too early to confirm whether the two incidents are related, the BBC reports.

8. #JOURNALISTS: Two Swedish journalists have been jailed for 11 years after being found guilty of entering Ethiopia illegally and supporting terrorism there. Martin Schibbye and Johan Persson admit to entering the country with the help of the outlawed Ogaden National Liberation Front, but say they were not in any way involved in terrorism.

9. #CHRISTMAS SPIRIT: A man from Colorado, USA, has returned $10,000 in cash that he found at a Las Vegas airport because he wanted to show his children that it was “the right thing to do”. Mitch Gilbert found two unmarked Caesar’s Palace envelopes at the airport and, upon his arrival home, discovered a huge amount of money inside, the AP reports.

After tracking down the owner, Gilbert transferred the money into the man’s bank account two days before Christmas.
