- The family of an Irish man missing in Amsterdam have launched a public appeal for information into his disappearance. Paul Nolan Miralles has been missing since early Wednesday.
- Incumbent leader Goodluck Jonathan looks like he’s topped the poll in Nigeria’s presidential election, but it remains unclear if he’s won enough support to avoid the need for a run-off second ballot.
- As the counting of votes continues in Finland, meanwhile, the nationalist True Finns party – running on a platform of opposing European bailout mechanisms and proposing withdrawal from the Euro – are emerging as the largest party with around 19.5 per cent of support – up from just 4 per cent last time out.
- Former Liverpool and Ireland players Ray Houghton and Ronnie Whelan have been urged to pull out of a live edition of RTÉ’s Premier Soccer Saturday in two weeks time – because it’s being sponsored by the Irish Sun. Liverpool FC, its players and staff have observed an unofficial boycott of the paper since its coverage of the Hillsborough tragedy.
- The 7,504 e-voting machines that have been gathering dust at public expense for the last nine years are to be finally sold off in the coming weeks.
- The death toll from the storms that battered the Deep South of the United States earlier this week has now reached 35.
- Cuban president Raul Castro may be paving the way for a new generation of leaders – after proposing that leaders be limited to two five-year terms of power. He and his brother Fidel have ruled the country for 51 years now.
- It’s certainly a good day to be a Potter. Stoke City put five past Bolton on their way to a stunning FA Cup semi-final victory in Wembley, setting up a final date with Manchester City in four weeks’ time. In the Premier League, meanwhile, Arsenal and Liverpool changed thrilling injury-time penalties (Liverpool’s equaliser was the last kick of the game, after 102 minutes!) to share the spoils at the Emirates.
- There’s life in the property market yet… as long as you’re not in Ireland. This luxury three-storey penthouse apartment in London has just sold for €153 million.
- The latest must-have fragrance is one infused with the scent of rashers. It’s called Bacón (that’s with an accent on the O) and you can buy a 30ml bottle for $36.
