TWO WEATHER WARNINGS came into effect at 2pm this afternoon.
The ‘orange’ and ‘yellow’ alerts from Met Éireann were issued yesterday by Met Éireann, cover much of the country, and will be in effect until early tomorrow.
The orange warning applies to Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo.
The weather service is warning it will be “extremely windy” from this afternoon through to early tomorrow morning.
It adds:
Southwest veering west winds will reach mean speeds 65 to 80km/h with gusts of 110 km/h., but gusts of up to 130km/h, are likely on exposed coasts and headlands for a time in the evening and early night.
The less-serious yellow alert is for Dublin, Kildare, Longford, Louth, Wexford, Wicklow, Westmeath, Meath, Roscommon, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Waterford.
According to Met Éireann, “southwest veering west winds will reach mean speeds 50 to 60 km/h with gusts of over 90km/h., but up to 110km/h. in exposed areas”.
Showers in the west and north will be heavy, with some turning to hail later tonight, according to forecasters.
There’ll be fewer showers in the east, and lowest temperatures tonight will be between 3 and 6 degrees.
The weather won’t be improving too much tomorrow either – it will be cool and blustery, with widespread showers, heaviest in the north-west and south-west.
The cool, showery conditions will continue through Monday too.
First posted 2pm.
