A 22-YEAR-OLD woman died yesterday evening after a tragic accident during a charity event in county Meath.

The young woman was driving a tractor during a charity run at Kilmainhamwood in Nobber when the collision occurred. There was no other vehicle involved in the crash but a passenger – another woman in her 20s – suffered injuries.

The driver was pronounced dead on arrival to Navan General Hospital. The passenger was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda but injuries have been described as not serious.

The incident happened at about 5pm yesterday, Gardaí said and investigations are continuing. An appeal for witnesses has been issued and anyone with information is asked to contact Navan station at 046 903 6100.

The woman is the fifth to die on Irish roads over the Bank Holiday weekend. Two people died in a two-car collision in Cork while a man and a woman died in separate crashes in Meath and Offaly.

Assistant Commissioner John O’Mahoney extended sympathies to the families and friend of those of died and Transport Minister Leo Varadkar has appealed to motorists to drive safely on the roads today.

  • What an awful tragic accident, my sincere sympathy to her family and friends. These events are becoming very popular with farmers and machinery enthusiasts, at a recent event I did witness some of the older tractors being driven on public roads without the minimum safety requirement of an anti roll bar. Roll Over Protection Systems are standard issue since the 70′s and many lives have been saved including my own as a result.
