The 'gym for people who hate gyms' has live music and an alcohol licence

This chain’s gyms look more like underground clubs or futuristic film sets.

1REBEL, A NEW chain of gyms opening in London, brands itself as the ‘anti-gym’ — but a more apt description might be the house music hipster gym.

There are currently two sites in London and they look more like underground clubs or futuristic film sets inside than a traditional gym.

The interiors are artfully disheveled in a way only possible through extensive interior design. The gyms also have trendy perks like cold press juice bars, music playlists curated by top DJs, and even free beer.

Check out what it’s like inside below.

Here’s the outside of one of the sites. Looks normal enough — but what’s that sign you can see through the window, free beer? Seems odd…

Once you go down the stairs you get to the front desk, which looks more like a hotel lobby than a traditional gym. 1Rebel is pay as you go, unlike most gyms, meaning you don’t have to sign up for a long contract. One session is £20, but you can buy a bundle of sessions to get a better deal.

There’s plenty of branded swag you can buy at the front desk if that’s your thing.

The highly stylised changing rooms look like something out of a science fiction movie. The benches are heated — just one example of the gym’s attention to detail.

Here’s the main workout space, with running machines and benches. They keep the lights down low for mood and pump out trendy dance music. You can check out the gym’s SoundCloud playlists here.

5

The benches store weights to maximize the limited space. Smart.

6

This area is also used for classes. This one is called ‘Reshape’ and promises ’45 minutes of physical and mental intensity’. In some cases these classes are accompanied by live music.

7

In the middle of the bank of machines is a room full of punch bags — again, pretty unusual for gyms these days.

8

Again, you can do classes here. This one is called ‘Rumble’. Sessions cost £20 a pop.

9

After the gym, hit the showers. Complimentary sweat and shower towels are included in the price of a session … and you can even have your towel chilled if you’re having a hot shower!

10

Help yourself to the posh toiletries while you’re washing up.

Once you’re done, you can grab a cold press juice or smoothie from in-house cafe Roots & Bulbs. Or, grab a free beer — the gym has an alcohol licence! GQ called 1Rebel “the gym for people who hate gyms”.
