EVERY WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you up to speed with the five things you should know as you head out the door.

1. #SENTENCING: Almost two thirds of murder victims’ families are dissatisfied with sentencing regimes in Ireland, according to new research. The study said that the portrayal of victims in court cases is of huge concern and distress to their families.

2. #ASYLUM SEEKERS: Ireland’s immigration services are more likely to reject applications from asylum seekers than all but a handful of the authorities in other EU countries. New figures show that 1,625 cases were ruled on last year and just 140 were granted some kind or positive protection.

3. #MENTAL HEALTH: The Acute Psychiatric Services Unit at Roscommon County Hospital was closed to admissions last weekend because of a staffing crisis leading to one ‘suicidal’ man being turned away. Staff nursing levels have dropped from 111 in 2009 to 58 this year.

4. #GRAFTON STREET: Dublin City Council spent €400,000 on the Grafton Street makeover before construction work has begun earlier this month. The money was spent on “investigative surveys” and design and administrative costs, the council said. The overall project is set to cost the taxpayer €4 million.

5. #BOOZE: We might be famed for our drinking culture but a new study has found that the British might be to blame for that. The research, conducted by UCD found that out complicated relationship with alcohol may date back to when we were under British rule with people living in “The Pale” more likely to binge drink than those in rural areas.
