The 9 at 9 Good morning! Here are the nine things you need to know as you kick off your Tuesday morning.

EVERY MORNING, TheJournal.ie brings you the nine things you need to know as you start your day.

1. #ABORTION Cabinet is to meet today on the issue of approving draft abortion legislation.  The issue has been a contentious one, with Fine Gael and Labourt disagreeing on factors including how many doctors should assess suicidal pregnant women wishing to have an abortion.  The Daily Mail says that it believes a third of the Fine Gael parliamentary party could lose the whip over the plans for the bill.

2. #GARDAÍ One garda a day is becoming insolvent, the Garda Representative Association said at its conference yesterday. The Irish Examiner said that the conference heard that the age group of gardaí worst hit financially is the 28 – 34 age group. The conference also heard allegations that crime figures are being “massaged”, RTÉ reports, but the Garda Commissioner said he has “no evidence of this”.

3. #SIPTU A report from the Comptroller and the Auditor General into the National Health and Local Authority Levy Fund, which was run by SIPTU from 2010, showed that there were “inappropriate” financial procedures in relation to fund expenditure, such as the fund administrator submitting the same invoices totaling €98,000 twice to be reimbursed, while some public body employees had their travels paid for by the fund.

4. #ADRIAN DONOHOE Garda detectives are putting pressure on the associates of one of the prime suspects in the murder case of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe, the Irish Independent reports. Yesterday’s searches in Co Louth were part of a move to gather information on a man believed to have been involved in the shooting, the paper says.

5. #BOSTON FBI agents investigating the Boston Marathon bombings have visited the Rhode Island home of dead suspect Tamleran Tsanaev’s in-laws, and carried away several bags. According to CNN, at least one bag was labelled DNA samples.

6. #BEES Ireland abstained from an EU vote yesterday on whether to impose an insecticide ban to protect bees. Although the majority of countries voted for the ban, there were not enough votes for it to be enforced. The European Commission said it will now decide on the adoption of the proposed restriction.

7. #BANGLADESH Bangladesh has rejected foreign aid to help with the rescue effort after the collapse of a factory complex, and defended the decision. “The need for immediate foreign assistance was not felt because our rescue operation has been sufficient and exemplary,” Home Secretary Mustak Ahmed told AFP.

8. #GUANTANAMO Extra medical staff have been sent to the US military prison in Guantanamo Bay to help address a hunger strike. With the strike now entering its 12th week, some 40 US Navy medical personnel, including nurses and specialists, arrived over the weekend. There are 166 detainees, 100 of whom are on hunger strike, of whom a fifth are being fed using tubes.

9.#SYRIA Syrian refugees now make up 10 per cent of the population of Lebanon, Oxfam has said. It also revealed that just half of the $1.5 billion (€1.1 billion) pledged in UN aid has been received so far over the past three months.
