GOOD MORNING

The 9 at 9 Good morning! Here are nine things you want to know as you start your day.

EACH DAY, TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you should know with your morning cup of coffee.

1. #STRIKE Dublin Bus drivers will begin their strike over pay today, which is likely to lead to widespread disruption for people in Dublin and the surrounding counties. Public Transport Minister Alan Kelly has said it is “a bad day for public transport in Ireland”, and asked all sides to come together “in an atmosphere of calm” to try and solve the problems.

2. #DRUGS Gardaí have seized an estimated €2.4 million worth of cannabis herb in an operation in Co Meath. Two men – aged 50 and 31 – were arrested in connection with the find and both are currently detained at Kells Garda Station.

3. #RTÉ Broadcaster Pat Kenny decided to leave RTÉ after a phone call to billionaire Denis O’Brien – who is now his new employer – the Sunday Times reports. It also says that Newstalk approached Kenny before his RTÉ contract expired on May 31. The Sunday Independent, meanwhile, suggests that Kenny made the ‘first move’ on Newstalk.

4. #PERRY A number of properties and assets owned by junior minister John Perry have been seized control of by Danske Bank, the Sunday Business Post reports. It says that this places further pressure on Perry, amid calls for his resignation. One of the properties to be seized includes a supermarket.

5. #CRASH A man (22) died in a single-vehicle crash on the R150, Duleek to Julianstown Road early this morning. He was the sole occupant of the car and was brought to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda after the crash, where he was pronounced dead.

6. #ZIMBABWE US Secretary of State John Kerry has described Zimbabwe’s disputed election – which led to President Robert Mugabe’s landslide victory- as “deeply flawed”. The European Union has also expressed concern about “incomplete participation” in the election.

7. #FIANNA FÁIL There is some disaffection with Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin – and a number of the party’s TDs and Senators have decided to take action, the Sunday Independent reports. It says there could be a potential leadership challenge by the party’s finance spokesman Michael McGrath before the next General Election.

8. #TERROR THREAT The White House has held a high-level meeting on terror concerns that prompted Washington to issue a worldwide travel alert and order its embassies across the Islamic world to close temporarily. The meeting was held as Interpol issued a global security alert after hundreds of militants were set free in jailbreaks linked to the Al-Qaeda terror network.

9. #TWITTER Today will see many prominent members of Twitter observing a ‘Twitter silence’ as part of an effort to encourage the social media giant to crack down on trolls and abusive tweets. While journalist Caitlin Moran, one of those spearheading the movement, says that the purpose is “to show what Twitter would be like if the trolls over-run this place”, others have questioned its effectiveness.
