1. #PERU Irish woman Michaella McCollum Connolly’s lawyer has flown out to her in Peru, and she and Melissa Reid have been questioned by police after drugs were allegedly found in their luggage, says the Irish Mirror. Connolly told the Irish Mirror that it is “very tough” in detention but she is coping.

2. #EGYPT Egypt is bracing for a ‘Friday of anger’ in Cairo after nearly 600 people were killed following a crackdown on their protest camps. The UN has urged ‘maximum restraint’ from all sides. The Muslim Brotherhood has called for anti-coup rallies to head towards Ramsis square after prayers today.

3. #LEAVING CERT Seventy five students have had their Leaving Cert results in a range of subjects withheld over fears they may have cheated, the Irish Daily Mail reports. It is open to appeal, but if the students cannot prove to the State Examinations Commission they did not break rules, they won’t receive a grade in the subject.

4. #CHARGES An Irish man who is facing charges related to the distribution of online child pornography is to make an application for bail on 11 September, the Irish Herald says. Eric Eoin Marques (28) has been described by the FBI as “the largest facilitator of child porn on the planet”.

5. #HORSE MEAT An Irish meat trading company, McAdam Food Products, has said it will sue ABP Food group for “alleged defamation and loss of business” over what it says were assertions made publicly during the horsemeat scandal.

6. #HOME BIRTH Pregnant Kilkenny woman Aja Teehan will find out today if she will be able to have a home birth with a self-employed community midwife contracted to the HSE. Her baby is due in October and Teehan had been told that due to a previous caesarean, she wasn’t suitable for a home birth with the HSE.

7. #ROAD DEATH A woman in her 50s died following a collision at Kilberry, Navan, Co Meath at 9.30pm last night. She was driving a moped, and collided with car. The female driver of the car was uninjured, said gardaí. An appeal for witnesses has been made. 

8. #NEW ZEALAND A 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck at 2.31 GMT in the Cook Strait near New Zealand. It was felt from Christchurch in the South Island to Auckland in the North Island. No tsunami alert was issued.

9. #WATER CHARGES Environment Minister Phil Hogan and Irish Water disagree over how much water will be supplied free of charge under the forthcoming water charges, says the Irish Independent. It notes that while Hogan wants the allowance based on the number of people in the house, Irish Water favours a system based on the size of the house.
