Asylum seekers

1. In our lead story this morning, prison campaigners are questioning the government’s practice of detaining asylum seekers for weeks before they are deported on special charter flights.

The Irish Penal Reform Trust says it “flies in the face” of international human rights standards to keep people imprisoned for “administrative purposes” ahead of a flight.

Bomb disposal in Limerick

2. Gardaí and army experts were dealing with an “unexplained device” found near Aughinish Alumina factory in Co Limerick last night, calling in army explosive ordnance disposal experts to make the scene safe.

Ciara Mageen

3. Irish athlete Ciara Mageean has announced she has been diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing treatment.

The European champion and two-time Olympian posted on Instagram that the diagnosis has “been a lot to take in,” but is “ready to face this with the same fight I’ve always brought to the track”.

Texas floods

4. At least six people have died and 20 girls attending a summer camp were reported missing in Texas after heavy rain caused flash flooding.

Oasis return

5. Oasis took to the stage for their first gig in 16 years last night, sending an adoring crowd into a frenzy.

Noel and Liam Gallagher swaggered onto stage before waving at concert goers at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium – the first stop on their long-awaited worldwide reunion tour.

Savings scheme for home buyers

6. A savings and investment scheme to help first-time buyers is under consideration by Government.

In an interview with The Journal, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said such a scheme could incentivise and give first-time-buyers an opportunity to save, adding, “that’s something we would examine, certainly”.

Housing protest

7. More than 80 trade unions and organisations have lent backing to a housing protest taking place in Dublin city centre later today. 

All-Ireland hurling

8. This weekend is an All-Ireland hurling semi-final weekend for those who observe, with Cork set to play a Dublin side that has already toppled Limerick. Tomorrow will see Kilkenny and Tipperary renew their rivalry.

Stop the lights

9. It’s what some in recent years may have termed a first-world problem, but bright lights left on for showings at an Odeon cinema at Dublin’s Point Square have led to a raft of complaints and has resulted in the cinema chain closing the offending screening room indefinitely.

The hubbub gained traction online when when one Odeon customer took to Reddit to share their frustration after encountering the offending lights while watching Danny Boyle’s zombie sequel 28 Years Later.
