Two men arrested and gardaí recover €900,000 as part of money laundering operation

Gardaí arrested the men (aged 31 and 67) this morning.

GARDAÍ HAVE ARRESTED two men in Dublin as part of an ongoing investigation into money laundering.

Gardaí arrested the men (aged 31 and 67) this morning.

The arrests had to do with an investigation invoice redirection fraud. Gardaí said that €900,000 was recovered by investigators as a result of the operation.

The laundering involved a European-based company being persuaded to send a VAT payment into the bank account of an individual, rather than the person the payment should have gone to.

Gardaí said they believed that the European company had been the target of a malware attack, which ad changed the details of the bank account where the money was to be spent.

Once the funds were transferred a number of other transactions were made in order to further spread out the money. With the European company’s assistance the €900,000 was recovered by the Financial Intelligence Unit/MLIU.

Both men are being detained under the provisions of section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 as amended at Blanchardstown Garda station.
