'I know there are a dwindling band of fanatics out there': TD hits out after his office was vandalised

The Cork TD had attended the march for choice in Dublin city centre last Saturday.

A TD WHOSE office was spray-painted with graffiti has hit out against the vandals.

Mick Barry, who is a member of the Anti-Austerity Alliance, shared a photograph of his office with the words “Baby Killer Out” sprayed on an outside wall today.

The Cork North–Central TD had last week attended the march for choice in Dublin and wore a Repeal campaign jumper in the Dáil on Tuesday. He claims the vandalism is linked to the two events.

Debate

Speaking to TheJournal.ie, Barry said: “It’s clear there’s a real debate ongoing at the moment.

“We will be vigorously campaigning on these issues. Our methods are the methods of mass demonstrations, dissemination of information and argumentation.

It would seem, for some of our opponents at least, they would be descending to the level of petty vandalism.

“I know there are a dwindling band of fanatics out there who will use any means to try and resist change. But this type of thing doesn’t phase you. The gardaí are involved and apparently there was CCTV footage and that’s being looked at now.

“It’s clearly intended to intimidate me and my party colleagues. The matter has been reported to the gardaí.

Desperation

“This is a mark of desperation on the anti-choice side. They must be flummoxed by the ground swell in Irish society for repeal of the Eighth Amendment 33 years after they had it inserted into the Constitution.

Unable to deal with the tide of history turning against them they are reduced to this type of thing.

“We are undeterred by this juvenile act and have no problem discussing and debating our position rationally with those who do not share our perspective on this matter.”
