The new Garda uniform An Garda Síochána

Rollout of new Garda uniform set to begin this week

The new Garda uniform will ditch shirts and ties from the current uniform.

AN GARDA SÍOCHÁNA are beginning the rollout of a new uniform this week, with over 13,000 Gardaí set to receive the updated uniform during the rollout.

The new uniform is set to be operational before the end of March, with the Garda Commissioner Drew Harris expected to announce a formal ‘go-live’ date.

All uniform members of An Garda Síochána are set to receive the updated uniform across all Garda divisions in over 560 Garda stations nationwide.

The Dublin region is set to receive the uniform first under the rollout, before being expanded to other Garda regions.

The new uniform consists of:

  • A two-tone softshell jacket
  • A two-tone waterproof jacket
  • Garda blue polo shirt
  • Operational trousers
  • Practical base layers

The current Garda cap will remain in operation as a “unique and distinctive element’ of the Garda uniform, while shirts and ties are set to be dropped.

Policies around wearing official headwear for religious and cultural reasons had previously been updated, allowing turbans, kufis, topis, kippahs or hijabs.

Sources have said that, from the outset, quality over the cost was the priority when deciding on the new uniform.

The updated uniform was a key recommendation within the report on the Future of Policing in Ireland, and will be the third time in a century of operation that the uniform has been updated.

Garda Representative Organisation President, Frank Thornton said that while members have not yet received the uniform, feedback from pilot divisions had been positive.

“While our members have yet to receive delivery of the new uniforms, the feedback from the divisions where it has been piloted has been positive,” said Thornton.

“The Garda Representative Association would welcome any moves to make our uniforms more comfortable as well as practical, progressive and suitable to modern policing.”

It has also been welcomed by the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors (AGSI), saying that the group had lobbied for a new uniform for years.

“This new uniform will be embraced by members who feel it will be more suited to outdoor frontline duties,” said the AGSI in a statement.

“The Association also welcomes the retention of the traditional uniform for formal occasions.”

Someone said ‘Ireland has the potential to become the Saudi Arabia of wind energy’
If this is true, why are we importing all the bigger wind turbines needed for all the large scale projects like this one?
No Irish manufacturers of these type of turbines.
Why not incentivise Irish companies to start producing them?

P.S. I’m not talking about attracting yet another multinational like Siemens to Ireland to pay pittance tax- there’s enough of those here already.

@Staker Wallace: because vestas, siemens,ge etc have 40-50 years of R&d and production expertise, it would cost billions so no, no Irish manufactures of these types of wind mills…

@Trevor Mc Evoy: Very defeatist attitude. A lot of start-ups headhunt from bigger, established companies.
If you’re worried about infringing patents, turbines have been around for over a hundred years. They’re all variations on a theme.

@Roy Dowling: Did a little google. They built it for 100m (in the 60s) took 20 years to break even, the rest is all profit. EDF. Longest lasting energy source and was the biggest example for 40 years. Still going strong. I’m sure I’ve got some of that wrong lol. @Soundy Sound:Its not the dsta centres as much as the double standards around them. Domestic users are pilloried for their electrical usage and our supplies under threat at peak times, yet we bring in data centre’s which individually consume the power of a small town and get subsidised rates, which the domestic consumer pays for

@Soundy Sound: fairly sure I was able to comment on apps before the huge spike in data centres around the country, but please do lose your little mind over it. the hypocrisy of electrical conservation, climate change etc makes the topic laughable. The grid was so much in the red last winter ESB thought they were going to start losing power at different parts of the country. But at least we can comment on an app eh?

Why do projects like this take so long to get built in this country? I’ve been hearing about this since the 7 turbines were installed off Arklow and that was 20 years ago. If it was a good idea then why are we still waiting? Why can’t our top civil service officials/politicians make decisions quicker, they’re paid enough?

@The next small thing: Ireland is the land that time forgot. Try to do anything! By the time your done listening to people implement rules and the incessant ‘no’ that resounds around our greasy rocks, you’ll see that it’s actually us that move too slow. We’ve implemented a system to reflect that lack of ambition, and it’s working well in fairness.

The top ten biggest Carbon Emitters in the State published this week & Eamon won’t be pleased, as they don’t include the Farmers. This published information must surely be misinformation & the work of the Far Right as Eamon can’t have his beloved Aviation Industry on top of the list. What will himself & Catherine Martin do if they have to reduce their multiple Business Class flights, there is only so much Carbon Credits they can steal from the Farmers to cover it.

    Fake news alarm!

” The project IS expected to create over 1,000 jobs in the construction phase and 75 new, long-term jobs associated with its proposed operations and maintenance base.”

The project has reduced it’s size by 25% – 40%
The project WAS supposed to create 1,000 temporary jobs.
