Presidential inauguration

1. President-elect Catherine Connolly will be inaugurated as the 10th President of Ireland in a ceremony at Dublin Castle today.

New housing plan

2. The government’s long-awaited new housing plan was signed off by the Cabinet’s sub committee on housing yesterday evening.

The plan will go to Cabinet for approval tomorrow, with the full details to be launched on Thursday.

US senate ends shutdown

3. The US Senate has passed legislation to reopen the government, bringing the longest shutdown in history closer to an end as a small group of Democrats ratified a deal with Republicans, despite searing criticism from within their party.

Rain warnings

4. It’s shaping up to be a very wet start to the day, with Status Yellow rain warnings in a number of counties across the island.

In the Republic, Cork, Kerry, Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, Tipperary and Waterford are all under the yellow warning for rain, while all of Northern Ireland is also under a yellow rain warning.

New Delhi car explosion

5. A car explosion near the historic Red Fort in India’s capital yesterday evening killed eight people and injured at least 19 others, police in New Delhi said.

The blast, which triggered a fire that damaged several vehicles parked nearby, took place near one of the gates of the Red Fort metro station.

Cork ‘high visibility’ gardaí

6. Cork is the next city to get increased garda visibility, after the operation in Dublin proved successful, the new Garda Commissioner has said. 

Justin Kelly will address the Oireachtas Justice Committee today, where he will discuss the benefits of the expansion.

Philippines typhoon

7. Rescuers have begun digging the Philippines out from the devastation of Typhoon Fung-wong today, as floodwaters receded in hundreds of villages and the storm’s death toll climbed to 18.

Fung-wong, which displaced 1.4 million people, had weakened into a severe tropical storm even as it began dumping rain on neighbouring Taiwan ahead of an expected landfall.

Booker Prize

8. Author David Szalay has become the first Hungarian-British author to win the Booker Prize.

His novel Flesh, a rags-to-riches tale exploring class and power, was described as an “extraordinary, singular novel” by Irish author and chairman of the judges, Roddy Doyle.

Dublin city assault

9. A man has been hospitalised following an alleged stabbing in Dublin city centre this morning.

The incident occurred on South Great George’s Street, Dublin 2 shortly after 12.30am.
