At least 24 people killed or badly wounded in NYC over egg-throwing

Newly compiled figures record number of deaths and injuries resulting from the Halloween prank since 1984.

RECENTLY COMPILED FIGURES SHOW that at least 24 people have been killed or seriously injured in violent incidents arising from egg-throwing pranks since 1984.

The figures were compiled through a review of articles in the New York Times, the Daily News, the New York Post and Newsday, according to the New York Times.

Police in New York say that eggings are a problem in the city and officers in Queens have asked shops not to sell eggs or shaving cream to youths for a week before Halloween.

The NYT writes that the violent incidents reviewed erupted during confrontations after eggs were thrown.

In 1994, a man stabbed and killed a 12-year-old boy from among a group of young boys who struck him with eggs.

Joseph Padro, 31, was shot dead in October 2005 after chasing a group of teenagers he thought had egged his van. One of the teenagers, 15-year-old Jeffrey Ivey, pleaded guilty to manslaughter, but said he had not egged the vehicle.

His lawyer said afterwards: “Whether he threw it or not, the deceased thought he had. What may start off as a prank does not always end how people may think, and in this case, it led to tragic results for both the deceased and Jeffrey Ivey”.
