Man accused of withholding information 'could have prevented murder of young man'

Jason Doogue was shot while sitting on a wall in Athy in August 2015.

A MAN HAS been charged with withholding information that gardaí say ‘could have prevented’ the murder of a young Co Kildare man outside his home a year ago.

Jason Doogue was fatally shot three times in the chest at Greenhills, Athy on 21 August 2015 while he was sitting on a wall, chatting to friends.

The gunman, who was on a BMX bicycle is understood to have fired directly at the victim, who was rushed to Naas General Hospital where he later died.

James Lammon (43) of Cardington Way, Athy, was arrested and charged with murder shortly afterwards. He is awaiting trial.

Christopher Tyrell of 1318 TownPark, Athy appeared at Naas District Court on Thursday following his arrest.

Arresting garda Scott Browne said:

The allegation is that if he had passed on information, the murder could have been prevented. This is about pre and post murder.

No objections were made to the granting of bail, however, it was requested that conditions be imposed.

It was ordered that Tyrell pay €300 of his own bond and no lodgement would be accepted. He has to sign in three days per week at Athy Garda Station.

Judge Desmond Zaidan also ordered that Tyrell surrender any travel documents, including his passport, and to not interfere with any state witnesses in relation to the shooting.

When Judge Zaidan asked the accused if he understood that he was being charged with the withholding of information in relation to the alleged murder, Tyrell said, “I do, your Honour.”

Garda Browne requested that Tyrell be remanded on bail for six weeks.

The accused is ordered to appear at Athy District Court on 4 October to await a book of evidence.

Defending solicitor Barry Powderley requested that the accused, who is on disability make an application for free legal aid. Judge Zaidan granted the application.
