Almost €1.4m raised at auction of seized gold bullion

The gold was seized by the Dublin Crime Response Team as part of investigations into organised criminal activity in the Dublin Metropolitan Region.

ALMOST €1.4 MILLION has been raised at an online auction of gold bullion seized by An Garda Síochána.

The auction is expected to raise over €2 million in total, which will then be returned to the Exchequer.

The gold was seized by the Dublin Crime Response Team as part of investigations into organised criminal activity in the Dublin Metropolitan Region (DMR) under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

The auction, which is being facilitated by Wilsons Auctions and is open to the public, features various quantities of gold coins and bars. It started at 1pm today and will close at 1pm Monday, 20 April.

A garda spokesperson said the sale is part of continued efforts to disrupt organised criminal activity by removing the financial benefits of crime.

Ken Holohan, Detective Inspector based in the DMR said: “Recovering and returning the proceeds of crime is a key part of disrupting organised criminal activity.”

“This auction ensures that seized assets are processed transparently, with all funds ultimately going back to the State where they belong.”
