COUNCILLORS IN DUBLIN have called on Bank of Ireland to return its College Green building to the state.
The landmark building was completed in 1739 and was originally home to the Irish parliament. It has been used as a Bank of Ireland branch since the early 1800s after it bought the site.
Some councillors have argued that the building’s historical significance means it should be publicly owned, as reported by the Irish Independent.
One councillor said it was “appalling” that the building wasn’t brought back into public ownership when the bank was bailed out in 2010. Another said that there is “a moral obligation” to return it to the state.
