Van driver killed as strong winds bring trees down on roads

A three-year-old child was also injured when a pallet blew off a truck in Belfast.

THE NORTHERN IRELAND Ambulance Service has urged people to exercise caution as they go about their daily business while the bad weather continues.

The service said it has had a busy day today, dealing with a number of storm-related injuries.

A man in Lisburn was killed when a tree fell on his van at 11.30am this morning.

In Belfast, two women were also blown in front of a bus. They required hospital treatment but their injuries are not life-threatening.

A pallet blew off a truck in Connswater, injuring three people including a three-year-old child and a 75-year-old woman who were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

“Our crews are also reporting difficult driving conditions with a number of fallen trees blocking roads,” the said. In the Portadown area, one crew was delayed in responding to a road collision due to the road being blocked by a tree.

The NIAS asked people to “remain vigilant when out on the road and be patient” while awaiting an ambulance which will arrive as soon as possible.
