The Bentley Continental GT is a car that quietly whispers 'I have arrived'

This week’s dream car combines supercar performance with movie star looks in one effortless package.

IF I HAD the money I’d buy…

A car that mixes supercar speed with splendid luxury in one effortless package. A handsome and elegant car with real road presence and the ability to turn every trip into a pleasure cruise. I’d buy a Bentley Continental GT.

Why a Bentley Continental GT?

The Conti GT is a super luxurious and fabulously British (although technically German) grand tourer that is not only gorgeous on the outside and sumptuous on the inside, but also packs a whole load of power. Getting behind the wheel of this GT really is an experience as it is super quick, quiet and stable. It handles beautifully too and the four-wheel drive helps to control all that power making this a very easy car to drive.

It also oozes style and gently whispers ‘I have arrived’ rather than screaming ‘I’ve won the lotto’. This is one classy motor.

What’s special about this particular one?

This particular model shines bright in its glamorous Moonbeam Silver metallic coat and really stands out from the crowd with its red leather interior. The cabin features a whole suite of conveniences.

It rides on 19-inch alloys and is powered by a wonderful 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged W12 petrol engine mated to a ZF second-generation six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. The unit produces 560hp at 6,100rpm, and torque of 650Nm at 1,600-6,100rpm. It also has Torsen-based permanent four-wheel drive.

All of these elements combine to make this car super quick – it will accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 4.8 seconds and goes on to a top speed of 318km/h (198mph). Beautiful and powerful.

What does it look like in action?

It looks like it can leap tall buildings in a single bound! Check out this archive footage of Tiff from Fifth Gear getting some air in the ‘most important new car of the season’ the 2003 Bentley Continental GT.

Who else drives one?

Rappers seem to love the GT: Ice T, Ludacris, Sean Kingston, Rick Ross and The Game all own one, as does Bernie’s daughter Tamara Ecclestone. Italian footballer Mario Balotelli drives a Conti GT which has a camouflage paint job. It’s hideous.

Perhaps the coolest-looking version is driven by Mr Ironman himself, Robert Downey Jr, who owns one in matte green.

It costs €32,950. What else could you get for the money?

If you are lusting after another two-door coupe then, for the same money, you could have this 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

… or how about this two-door 2017 Volkswagen Beetle?
