GARDAÍ ARE INVESTIGATING a fire that broke out yesterday at a disused historical building in Co Offaly.

The blaze at Birr Workhouse may have been started maliciously, gardaí believe.

The fire broke out at around 2.30pm yesterday, but was later brought under control.

The building was not in use at the time of the incident. No one was injured.

A garda spokesperson confirmed an investigation had been launched.

Birr Workhouse, a pre-famine workhouse, was opened in 1842 and closed in 1921.
