Here's the first clear look at the camouflaged BMW X2

BMW is calling the X2 a Sports Activity Coupe.

WE STILL HAVE a while to wait before the world premiere of the new BMW X2 but these photos are the first clear look of the latest Sports Activity Coupé from the BMW X family.

Unveiled at last year’s Paris Motor Show in concept form, the BMW X2 is the coupe version of the X1, just as the X6 is to the X5 and the X4 to the X3 – the even-numbered BMW off-roaders are supposed to be the sportier coupe-like versions of their odd-numbered counterparts.

In these photos, the new Sports Activity Coupe can be seen in some off-road locations but we all know the X2′s future environment is most likely going to be the suburbs, hence the lurid camouflage – which BMW says is the perfect outfit for this expedition into the urban jungle as the “striking finish in yellow, grey and black highlights the distinctive qualities of the new Sports Activity Coupé in optimum fashion.”

As much as the Munich manufacturer has tried to disguise the X2, which is still in development phase, we can see that the car is quite similar to last year’s X2 Concept with its low and sporty roofline and squat stance. It has scowling headlights, large inverted kidney grilles, a dropped rear number plate, and sleek rear lights.

It’s rumoured to be based on the same transverse-engined platform as the X1 (along with the 2 Series Active Tourer and Mini Countryman) and will probably have the same drivetrains too, which means front-wheel drive on base models and xDrive on the rest. We are optimistic for a fast M Power version, too. Expect to see the BMW X2 at loads of motor show between now and its release next year.
