Bord Gáis opens €400m power station

Cork facility could supply energy to up to 450,000 homes using steam and gas turbines to generate electricity.

BORD GÁIS ENERGY IS OPENING a new €400m power station at Whitegate, Co Cork, today.

Construction on the station began in 2008 and it is ready to begin supplying power to the national grid from this week, according to BusinessWorld.

The station has the capacity to supply up to 450,000 homes with electricity and operates using gas and steam turbines to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Bord Gáis CEO John Mullins says the facility should contribute towards reducing the price of electricity in Ireland, according to the Examiner. Speaking at the power station’s launch, Minister Micheál Martin said he welcomed the facility in competing “with existing players”.

In September, Bord Gáis had warned of a jump in customer disconnections due to unpaid bills, but last week the company said it would suspend disconnections during the bad weather, according to RTÉ.
