CHI faces investigation over data breach of health records at Tallaght Hospital

The investigation was launched following concerns regarding the security of the health records of multiple patients.

LAST UPDATE | 14 Aug 2025

THE DATA PROTECTION Commission (DPC) has launched a formal inquiry into Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) following concerns about the security of children’s health records at its Tallaght University Hospital (TUH) facility.

The inquiry comes after the DPC received information from multiple sources, including protected disclosures and a breach notification submitted by CHI.

An unannounced site inspection was carried out at hospital by the DPC on 16 July.

The investigation will focus on CHI’s compliance with GDPR, particularly the security of personal data and the management of physical health records at the Tallaght site.

In a statement, CHI said it is “cooperating fully” with the DPC.

“As this is an ongoing regulatory process, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time,” the statement read.

“Our priority remains the protection of patient information and ensuring all personal data is handled in line with our legal obligations.”
