Up to 200 Texas National Guard troops arrive in Illinois as Trump plans Chicago deployment

The Illinois attorney general has accused the president of using US troops “to punish his political enemies.”

APPROXIMATELY 200 TEXAS National Guard troops have arrived in Illinois ahead of a planned deployment in Chicago that is strongly opposed by local Democratic officials.

The troops were sent as part of a mission to protect “federal functions, personnel, and property,” a Pentagon official said on condition of anonymity, adding that the Guardsmen have been mobilized for “an initial period of 60 days.”

The planned deployment of troops from Texas has infuriated Democratic Governor JB Pritzker, who said they “should stay the hell out of Illinois.”

President Donald Trump over the weekend authorized the deployment of 700 National Guard troops to Chicago, sparking a lawsuit by Illinois state officials.

In their suit, Illinois Attorney General and counsel for Chicago accused Trump of using US troops “to punish his political enemies.”

“The American people, regardless of where they reside, should not live under the threat of occupation by the United States military, particularly not simply because their city or state leadership has fallen out of a president’s favor,” they said.

But Judge April Perry, an appointee of President Donald Trump’s Democratic predecessor Joe Biden, declined to issue an immediate temporary restraining order, instead scheduling a full hearing for Thursday and asking the government to provide more information.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has defended the plan to send troops to Chicago, claiming that the third-largest US city is “a war zone.”

Trump has similarly called Portland “war-ravaged,” but District Judge Karin Immergut issued a temporary block on the deployment of troops to the West Coast state of Oregon, after which the president threatened to use emergency powers against rebellion to send more forces into Democratic-led US cities.
