  • The President-elect has been greeted by thousands of supporters in his native Galway today: more than 5,000 supporters met Michael D Higgins in Eyre Square, just one day after it was revealed that he will become the ninth President of the Republic of Ireland.
  • A woman who was arrested over the abduction of a man in East Wall, Dublin, on 20 October has been released without charge. The woman, aged in her early twenties, was arrested as part of the investigation into the abduction of 29-year-old Ciarán Noonan, whose whereabouts are still unknown.
  • A 19-year-old man has been killed following a single-vehicle collision on the N21 near Rathkeale, Co Limerick at about 8.20 am this morning. The man was the car’s only occupant.
  • Eamon Dunphy used his last show on Newstalk to reveal some of the reasons behind his decision to leave the station, mentioning Sam Smyth – the Today FM presenter being axed from his Saturday show – and accusing the owner of the two radio stations, Denis O’Brien of “hating journalism”. Dunphy also made reference to the working environment in Newstalk and said “not nice things are happening in this place”.
  • A two-year-old boy has lost his life following a fire in his Cork home last night. The boy was brought to hospital, along with his mother and brother, after the alarm was raised but passed away shortly afterwards. The boy’s mother and four-year-old brother remain in a serious condition.
  • Last night, a group of web designers, writers, programmers and code writers have worked until the early hours in Dublin to create new websites for three charities. The second year of the 24 The Web project saw 21 people chosen for their various skills gather in a donated space in the city centre to build three new websites in a day.
  • Police in Derry have arrested a man in his thirties and launched an investigation following the fatal stabbing of a 56-year-old man in the city in the early hours of this morning.
  • The British Prime Minister David Cameron has threatened to block aid from the UK to countries that impose anti-homosexual laws – saying that nations receiving aid should adhere to “proper human rights”.
  • Six alleged militants have been killed by suspected American drone aircraft on the Pakistan-Afghan border.
  • The Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has warned against Western intervention in his country’s 7-month-old uprising, saying such action could trigger “another Afghanistan”.
