Pegeen O'Sullivan with her father the Irish writer Liam O'Flaherty An Phoblacht

Daughter of Irish author Liam O'Flaherty leaves Sinn Féin £338k in her will

O’Sullivan was a lifelong Republican who dedicated her life to causes such as prisoner support.

THE DAUGHTER OF author Liam O’Flaherty has left almost £340,000 to Sinn Féin in her will.

Pegeen O’Sullivan died three years ago at her home in England aged 96. She was originally from Dublin.

Her father Liam O’Flaherty was a socialist and is regarded as one of the most important Irish literary figures of the early 20th Century.

O’Sullivan was a lifelong Republican who dedicated her life to causes such as prisoner support.

In the second quarter of this year, Sinn Féin received £338,550.17 that O’Sullivan had left the party in her will, the BBC reports.

It was by far the largest sum of money donated to a political party in Northern Ireland in the three month period.

O’Sullivan and her husband Christie, a Cork-born trade unionist, were active in the Irish community in London, living in Camden for many years.

They helped organise the first Camden Irish Conference in 1990.

They also helped with the Wolfe Tone Society and Republican prisoner support groups such as Fuascailt and Saoirse.

At O’Sullivan’s funeral in 2022, Sinn Féin TD Maurice Quinlivan said she was passionately opposed to partition.

“There wasn’t a protest on Irish issues that she and her late husband Christy weren’t at,” he said.
