Irish couple still fighting for life after crash that killed toddler
The Cork town where Con and Elber Twomey lived is in “deep shock” after the accident, the parish priest has said.
A MAJOR INVESTIGATION is under way into the UK car crash that killed a Cork toddler and left his parents fighting for life.
Con Twomey, 39 and his wife Elber Twomey, 36, remain in hospital in a critical condition following the fatal accident in Torquay, Devon on Friday.
Their son Oisin, two, died in the crash, and their unborn child was also lost.
A Polish man in his 20s, who lived in the area, was also killed in the smash. He was the driver of the other car, a Vauxhall Vectra.
Devon police have confirmed that an officer witnessed the collision, which is being investigated by detectives from the force’s Major Crime Investigation Team as well as specialist crash investigators.
Fr Dave Herlihy, who officiated at the Twomeys’ wedding in Kanturk, Co Cork, said the local area was in “deep shock” after the accident. He told Newstalk Breakfast:
The whole place is reeling, and I suppose trying to come to terms with how such a thing could happen.
He said the couple had been “devoted” to each other and to their son.
Some 25 emergency vehicles attended the scene after the crash on Friday afternoon, as well as three air ambulances which helped evacuate the victims.
The road was closed for ten and a half hours following the incident.
The Irish Examiner reports that police are investigating the possibility that the crash may have been a suicide attempt by the driver of the Vectra.
