Damage caused by vandals to Dublin playground could cost €300k

This is the third time Diamond Park has been damaged by vandals since it was reopened in August 2023

A PLAYGROUND IN North Dublin’s Gardiner Street could cost 300k to refurbish after it was set alight by vandals on Halloween night.

This is the third time Diamond Park has been damaged by vandals since it was reopened in August 2023 – it will now remain closed until repairs are complete.

A report by Dublin City Council into the latest damage found that anti-social behaviour on Halloween resulted in “extensive vandalism” and irreparable damage.

Deirdre Prince, who carried out the report, said the popular park was visited by hundreds of children and locals everyday, and was also used for celebrations honouring Kelly Harrington’s Olympic success.

“This is the third time vandalism has caused significant damage to the playground and the park, which has resulted in closure of this much needed amenity space in the area since its opening just over 2 years ago,” she said.

The report outlined that there was damage to playground equipment, severe fire damage
to the play tower and irreparable damage to several fencing panels which have had to be removed.

A playground specialist will ensure that the fire has not significantly damaged any structural elements.

Dublin City Council is in contact with An Garda Síochána regarding the vandalism in the park.

The report also outlined that security staff in Diamond Park and the nearby Liberty Park have recently been targeted in anti-social incidents.

As a result they are not currently patrolling Liberty Park and it will also remain closed.
