Dublin councillors back report calling for Moore Street preservation

Members back a report which urges Arts minister Jimmy Deenihan not to allow a full redevelopment of the site.

DUBLIN CITY COUNCILLORS have adopted a report which calls for the preservation of the site at Moore Street where the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising made their final surrender.

Members last night approved a report tabled by a cross-party committee which recommended that four houses at numbers 14 to 17 Moore Street be saved from demolition or redevelopment, as well as preserving nearby lanes used by the rebels as they fled the GPO.

The report recommends that Arts minister Jimmy Deenihan refuse to allow proposals which would see the demolition of the rear of the buildings to make way for a commercial complex.

The area is a designated national monument, meaning the minister has the ability to veto any redevelopment projects.

A development proposed for the north end of O’Connell Street would have seen many of the Moore Street structures demolished to make way for a “retail-led mixed development”.

The report – which stops short of recommending the preservation of the entire terrace – will now be passed on to the minister.

Deenihan said last May he wanted to make a decision on the site ‘as soon as possible’, but a decision had been deferred until the input of the council was sought.

Sinn Féin had been hoping to ensure the preservation of the site – and its potential development into a memorial or commemoration of the 1916 leaders – in time for the centenary of the Easter Rising in three years’ time.

It remains unclear, however, whether the current 16 Moore Street – which is currently a derelict retail unit – is actually the building from which the leaders surrendered. The street was renumbered in the 1930s and it has been suggested that the final post of the rebels was actually the unit which is now number 18.

First thing is to get rid of all these useless shops run by foreign nationals and make the street less intimidating. I was very saddened when I visited to see the state of such an iconic street in the heart of the city.

The “Foreign Nationals”, as you put it, have breathed some life into otherwise derelict buildings by refurbishing them and starting businesses and providing much needed employment.
I have always felt more than safe on Moore Street.
Likewise, Parnell Street – the Chinese community have resurrected this side of the city and SAVED the north side of O’Connell Street from turning into a no-go area.
I think your problem is with “Foreign Nationals”. Full Stop.

Intimidating? Why? Because foreign people scare you? It’s a lot less scary than 20 years ago, same for Parnell St.

Fine Gael don;t want Moore st preserved, in fact, given half the chance fine gael would build an office block on the garden of remembrance and raise the union jack from the gpo.

Ah Jeasus, either the government will finally do something about this streets and buildings in a way of refurbishing it all, or just knock it down. This street is nothing but a toilet of the north side I’m surprised that the street vendors are getting permissions to sell anything in there.

Joleen do you even know what has happened on this street and buildings surrounding it? That’s why I’m saying to either preserve it some way or redevelop it. Dublin has a reach history and there is plenty of places that have some significance but it doesn’t mean that we have to leave them be. Soon enough all that history will fall on somebody’s head.

You didn’t say anything about preserving it. You said it was a toilet bowl and should be knocked down or re-developed. Yes I know all about Moore street, past and present. I was born and reared (and still live) in Dublin.

Why not destroy it? The dream of the rising died a long time ago, it would be fitting to bulldoze it. That and the GPO where I received a letter from, saying they were going to forcibly enter my family home in the search for a TV. Is Moore street / GPO a reminder of how we have failed or something for inspiration?
